A POEM BY BAXTER THE CAT
I am going
to get that mouse,
He was scurrying earlier through my house.
He’s a little brown thing, with a tail so
long,
I’m telling you, I’m going to make him gone.
I saw him
earlier eating cheese,
My people won’t give cheese to me.
If I don’t catch him, he’ll turn into a rat,
Oh, NO, I will never allow that.
In case you
haven’t guessed, I am a cat,
A cat who hates mice, and also rats.
I’ve got to run, here comes the dog,
He’s so big, even bigger than a hog.

SIMON
THE DOG’S REPLY
You see that
cat,
That cat chasing that rat?
I’m the dog, the dog
The cat said is bigger than a hog.
Well, I’m
going to get that cat,
He’s no good, he can’t even catch that rat.
Him, my people won’t miss,
It’s me they like to kiss.
Well, the cat
got away,
But tomorrow is another day.
Tomorrow I will get that cat,
When he comes out to chase that rat.

THE RAT’S
RESPONSE
I’m the rat,
Being chased by the cat,
Who’s being chased by the dog,
Who’s bigger than a hog.
That cat won’t
catch me,
I’m way too fast, you see.
Tomorrow IS another day,
Another day, I’ll get away.
Tomorrow, there
will be more cheese,
They leave it out just for me.
You’re jealous they didn’t leave it for you,
And, I’m too fast, so there’s nothing you can
do.

CINDY THE CAT’S
POEM
Hi, I’m Cindy,
the other cat.
don’t like that dog or that rat.
Baxter’s okay, he’s a cat too.
I think Mom’s trying to start a zoo.
Now, I’m a real
laid back and lazy kind of cat.
Have no time to run from the dog, or chase a
rat.
But that dog doesn’t bother me,
Because I won’t run, you see.
I hope Mom
doesn’t get a snake,
That’s a fear I can’t take.
I’ve talked to you now, so leave me be.
I think it’s time I got more sleep.
